July 10, 2016 12.00pm - June 15, 2016 5.00pm
The theme for this year's Carnival is 'All The World's a Stage' and World music is playing a big part in Carnival programming for this coming Sunday 10 July. For the first time there will be a World Stage featuring music from Dr Benaka Karanth, the Indonesian Students Association in Oxford, the Lani Singers from West Papuaa, Delnavaz and Ran Kan Kan with Cuban rhythms.
Celebrate Carnival, Cuban-style, dancing to heart-stopping tunes and foot-tapping rhythms from hottest golden age of Cuban big bands. Topping the bill on the All the World's a Stage music stage at the Asian Cultural Centre, off Manzil Way, are Ran Kan Kan - Oxford's 20-piece Cubanista big band.
Ran Kan Kan was set up in 2011 by musicians attending a Cuban music workshop. They hold regular gigs at Oxford's Old Fire Station, using the opportunity to bring other live bands from different world music genres to Oxford, and this year again contribute a Cuban flavour to Cowley Road Carnival.
Ran Kan Kan has a growing fan base, who delight in dancing the night away to classic songs from the golden age of Cuban Big Bands, in son montuno, mambo and bolero styles. Singers Pancho Vera and Nikki Jackson are supported by a luxuriant horn section, playing over complex and syncopated Latin rhythms.
One thing is guaranteed, you will be dancing by the end. Ran Kan Kan are playing on the Carnival World Stage at 4.20 pm on Sunday 10 July.
