Attracting a crowd of 45,000 people, the Cowley Road Carnival is the biggest free community cultural event in the Oxfordshire calendar – and the best day out of the year.
The Carnival exists to celebrate community through culturally diverse arts, events and education, involving a host of schools, charities, community groups and residents from all over the city and beyond in a series of events culminating in the Carnival event.
It requires significant time, energy and resources to make Carnival happen. The development activities throughout the year (including pre Carnival workshops in schools), outreach, publicity, event production costs, security and clean-up operations costs are over £100,000 annually.
As well as the traditional procession, Carnival now uses surrounding open spaces and venues, including Manzil Gardens, the community centres and local charity and business venues, to stage events and performances in partnership with arts and community organisations. Cowley Road Carnival will continue to have big impact on the local area and as a major event for the city, with wide appeal to a diverse audience of all ages.
Supporting Carnival offers an un-missable opportunity to reach key audiences. In 2014 Carnival attracted 45,000 people to enjoy the afternoon, with a total spend nearly £800,000 and an average spend of around £17.
